A legacy that started in 1974…

When the brand-new School House opened its doors at 25 Melrose Street, a bright-eyed third former from South Otago named Roger Landels began his journey as an Otago Boys’ High School student.

In the five decades since, countless boys have called those cubicles home - walking the same halls, sharing meals in the dining room, and building memories that have shaped who they are today.

In 2018, Roger - by then with two boys at School House - joined forces with Des Smith and Brett Burgess to launch a stock drive fundraising campaign to make improvements to the carpark but faced a setback when consent was denied, but the spark they lit ignited the momentum driving the redevelopment project we are working towards today.

Though Roger sadly passed away last year, his efforts were the beginning of something lasting - a vision now being realised for future generations of OBs boys.

It’s a full circle moment with Roger’s wife Susan now working at the hostel having taken over from Janis Shaw as School House Matron. Susan said: “Roger was keen to see the hostel get the upgrade our OBs boys deserve, I know he’d be very satisfied to see how far the Foundation has come with this project.”
